- Abstract:
This article examines the commentary practices of Irina Arkadyevna Zaitseva (1951–2024), a leading research fellow at the Department of Russian Literature of the Institute of World Literature (IWL RAS), who worked as part of the Institute’s academic team on the preparation of the Complete Works of Nikolay Gogol. The material for the article draws on I.A. Zaitseva’s scholarly writings, which contain reflections on her own experience as a commentator, as well as her personal correspondence with the author of this publication. The study describes various commentary strategies employed by Zaitseva in tracing the history of the text, identifying and presenting its critical reception, and compiling the realia commentary. A separate section of the article is devoted to the ethics of commentary. The article formulates the principles that guided Zaitseva in her work. These include a creatively critical approach to the legacy of previous generations of commentators; reliance on firsthand study of primary sources, with the possibility of expanding their corpus in cases of “fading manuscripts”; a commitment to uncovering and presenting to the reader the distinctive features of the individual creative process; the use of a hermeneutic approach in conveying the critical reception of a classical text; a clear distinction between “scholarly commentary” and a scholarly or dictionary article; adherence to both scholarly criteria (factual accuracy and richness, an annalistic quality) and aesthetic requirements (style, tempo, precision of wording) for the commentary text; and the search for a “key” that would reveal the specific poetics of the text under study and determine the most effective manner of presenting the research material. The article also addresses Zaitseva’s personal intellectual stance, as she actively believed in the value and significance of commentary work, holding that the publication of classics shapes the development of national culture and national identity.
