  • Abstract:

The poet Mikhail Bestuzhev-Ryumin that used to publish his critical reviews in the journal Severnaya pchela on many ways followed Bulgarin in his criticism and polemic in his own journals – Severny Mercury and Guirlanda (1830-1832). The article traces the evolution of Bestuzhev-Ryumin’s literary orientation, the changes in his attitude to Bulgarin – from respectful to highly critical – and to the “literary aristocrats” – from hostile to quite tolerant. Bestuzhev-Ryumin’s letters to the patron of art P.N.Demidov published herewith, contain some biographical details, information on the financial side of his editions, the recognition among the readers; the letters also help to better understand the poet’s mentality, ideological position and his publishing strategies.
