“Notes on Gondla” by Nikolay Gumilyov

Publication of Gumilyov’s notes on his dramatic poem “Gondla” allows Gumilyov scholars to significantly refine dominant assumptions about this play and its hero. The notes concern the play’s sources, characters and images, conflict, plot and motifs, principles of its theatrical production. Comparing the original conception of the play as it occurs in the notes and the completed work demonstrates a considerable gap between them (and, in some points, even direct contradictions) which provides material for interesting conclusions. These notes are also one of the manifestations of Gumilyov’ participation in the project of “historical pictures” of “World Literature” (“Vsemirnaya Literatura”) publishing house.
